Overview
This project furthers my passion for sailing and my love of instructional design. The tutorial is designed to help adult learners understand the navigation rules when out on the water. The course was built using Articulate Storyline. I drew each of the drawings in Adobe Illustrator and created scalable vector graphics so the training can be completed using any web-capable device.
This project was (and still is) a larger project that is still being developed. Conceptualizing a course based on a 300-page document is a challenge. Identifying the most crucial information and then "chunking" that material into a few concepts was critical. I settled on vocabulary, general rules, and sailing-specific rules because I wanted to reach anyone interested in sailing to be successful.
Each rule has a scenario where the learner must identify which vessel has the right of way in each situation. After making a choice, learning is reinforced with feedback supporting the choice if correct or guidance if the choice was incorrect with the opportunity to try again. Letting learners work out scenarios for themselves enables autonomy and allows individuals to rely on previous knowledge and intuition.
